Dishwasher Not Draining? 8 Causes to Check in Fargo
You open the dishwasher at the end of a cycle and there’s dirty water sitting in the bottom. It’s one of the most common dishwasher calls in Fargo, and a good share of them come down to a clog you can clear yourself. Here’s what to check, in order, and when it’s time to call for repair.
First: Safety
Turn off power to the dishwasher before you reach into the tub or take anything apart. Many dishwashers are hardwired, so switch off the breaker, not just the door controls. Lay towels down before you remove the filter, because the standing water will come out.
1. The Filter Is Clogged
Most newer dishwashers have a removable filter under the lower spray arm. Food, labels, seeds and grease collect there and block the water from reaching the pump. Twist the filter out, rinse it under warm water, scrub the fine mesh with a soft brush and put it back until it locks. Many people never know the filter is there, so this fixes a lot of drain problems.
2. The Garbage Disposal Is Clogged or New
Most dishwashers drain through the garbage disposal. If the disposal is full of food, the dishwasher can’t push water through it. Run the disposal with cold water, then try a drain cycle.
If you just installed a new disposal, check the knockout plug. New disposals come with a plastic plug in the dishwasher inlet that has to be knocked out during installation. If it’s still there, the dishwasher can’t drain at all.
3. The Sink Drain Is Clogged
If the sink on the same side drains slowly too, the clog is in the house drain, not the dishwasher. Clearing the sink drain usually fixes both.
4. The Drain Hose Is Kinked or Blocked
The drain hose runs from the dishwasher to the disposal or sink drain. It can kink when the dishwasher is pushed back into place, and it can clog with grease and food where it connects to the drain. Look under the sink for a sharp bend or a crushed section.
5. The Air Gap Is Clogged
Some kitchens have a small chrome cap on the sink deck called an air gap. If yours does and water spills out of it during a drain, it’s clogged. Pull the cap off and clean out the debris.
6. The Drain Pump Has Failed or Is Blocked
The drain pump pushes the water out. Broken glass, a cherry pit or a bit of plastic can jam the impeller, and pump motors also wear out with age. A humming sound with no draining often points to a jammed or failing pump. On Bosch dishwashers, an E24 or E25 code usually means a blocked drain hose or filter, or a blocked drain pump.
7. The Check Valve Is Stuck
A small check valve keeps dirty water from flowing back into the tub. If it sticks closed, water can’t leave. If it sticks open, drained water can flow back in. Either way, the dishwasher looks like it didn’t drain.
8. Hard Water Scale or a Control Fault
Fargo’s water is moderately hard to hard. Over time, scale can build up on the filter, pump inlet and check valve, which slowly restricts drainage. Less often, a failed control board never tells the pump to run. That’s usually the last thing to check after the parts above. Read more about hard water appliance damage in Fargo.
What You Can Safely Do Yourself
- Clean the filter and the area under it.
- Run the garbage disposal, and remove the knockout plug if the disposal is new.
- Clear the sink drain.
- Straighten or replace a kinked drain hose.
- Clean the air gap if you have one.
If the dishwasher still won’t drain after these steps, the next steps mean pulling the dishwasher out or taking the pump apart. That’s a good time to call.
How to Keep It From Happening Again
- Scrape plates before loading.
- Clean the filter about once a month.
- Run the disposal before starting the dishwasher.
- Run a cleaning cycle with a citric acid or dishwasher cleaner every few months to keep scale down.

Call (701) 315-1302FAQs
Is it safe to leave standing water in my dishwasher?
For a short time, yes, but it starts to smell within a day or two. Scoop or sponge it out, clean the filter and try a drain cycle.
Why is my dishwasher not draining after I installed a new garbage disposal?
The knockout plug in the disposal’s dishwasher inlet was probably never removed. It has to be knocked out before the dishwasher can drain through the disposal.
Is a dishwasher that won’t drain worth repairing?
Usually, yes. Most drain problems are clogs, a drain pump or a check valve, which cost far less than a new dishwasher. If the dishwasher is past about 9–12 years old and needs a major part, replacement may make more sense.
